Energy Consultants: Showing Credentials and Funding Fit

How an energy consultancy shows its listing, discipline and building types verifiably, how funding notes get a date and a caveat, and which fields the enquiry form needs.

People looking for an energy consultant rarely search for a name. They search for a property: for someone whose listing matches the funding programme that matches their building. That check happens before anyone picks up the phone, and it happens on the website. If the page says only "energy advice, renovation roadmap, funding", the question stays open and the call often does not come at all — not because the service is weak, but because the answer was missing. This article shows how a consultancy puts its listing, its discipline and the building types it covers on the page in a verifiable form, how funding programmes can be described with a date and a caveat without promising an outcome, and how an enquiry form can collect the building data so that even the first phone call is a technical conversation.

Demand follows the calendar. As the heating season starts, the triggers pile up: a bill higher than expected, a boiler that will not last the winter, a sale contract that requires an energy performance certificate. The order of magnitude behind this is no niche: the number of subsidised energy consultations in 2024 was 135,000 (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste). In each of those cases the first question is the same, and it is not a technical one but a formal one: does this consultation count towards the programme I want to use? That answer belongs neither in a PDF nor in the first meeting, but in the visible part of the home page.

The difference between an offer and a credential

"We advise you on every funding programme" is an offer. "Listed in the Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste, discipline engineering, building types residential, listing valid until [month and year]" is a credential. The offer appears on every second website in this sector and therefore no longer carries a decision. The credential can be checked, it has a date, and it loses its effect only when it is left unmaintained. The effort involved in that difference is four lines.

The credentials block: what actually belongs in it

The Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste is the register the federal building programmes refer to.

According to the list, more than 22,800 (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste) experts are registered there, around 20,600 (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste) of them available through the search function. The gap between those two figures matters more for your own page than it looks: anyone registered but not findable through the search will not be found via the register and has to create that findability entirely on their own website. That is exactly when the credentials block carries the load a directory would otherwise take.

The register also shows which disciplines the listed professionals come from: 53 per cent (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste) engineering, 17 per cent (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste) skilled trades, 14 per cent (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste) architecture, eight per cent chimney sweeps and six per cent technicians (as of 07|2025). For a single firm that means the discipline alone barely distinguishes it from others, while the combination of discipline, building type and trigger very much does. That combination is what belongs in the credentials block — not the discipline on its own, and certainly not as an abbreviation.

  • The listing with its number and the body that maintains it, linked to the public profile
  • The discipline written out rather than abbreviated: engineering, architecture, skilled trade, technician or chimney sweep
  • The building types the listing covers: residential, non-residential, listed buildings, plant and processes
  • The date of the last renewal and the period the listing runs for
  • The programmes whose applications the firm supports technically, each with its full programme name
  • The additional qualifications beyond the base qualification, each with the year of the certificate
  • A note on how clients can check the listing themselves, including the name of the search function
  • A named contact with phone number and hours, so the credential does not end in a dead end

Programmes [programme name 1], [programme name 2]
Checkable via the search function of the expert register

One point on that list is regularly overlooked: a listing in the expert register runs for three years (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste) and is only renewed afterwards if current evidence of continuing education or practical references is supplied; that evidence is checked. A website naming the listing but no date is therefore asserting a state it does not support. A date next to it costs one line and turns the assertion into a statement. Maintaining that date also builds in a reminder: if the listing expires in spring, that shows on your own page from the previous autumn.

The stranger's-eye test

Open your own page on a phone and read only what is visible without scrolling. Does it say what the firm is listed for? Is there a building type? Is there a date? If one of the three answers is missing, it belongs at the top — not as a longer text, but as three lines above the first heading. How such a block works alongside seals and master craftsman certificates depends less on the image than on whether the statement can be checked.

Funding notes with a date and a caveat

Funding is the reason many consultations are requested at all, and at the same time the field with the greatest risk of false expectations.

A look at the scale puts it in context: among the single measures for residential buildings under the federal funding scheme, the installation of 79,465 (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste) heat pumps was subsidised in the first quarter of 2026, which was 88.51 per cent (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste) of the heat generators subsidised there in that period. Anyone supporting replacements in existing buildings is not describing a marginal topic. All the more reason to separate advice from installation — enquiries about heat pumps and heating follow a different expectation than a consultation with a written report.

The individual renovation roadmap is the second anchor. Of 55,904 (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste) single measures for residential buildings under the federal funding scheme in the first quarter of 2026, around 29,644 (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste) were carried out with the roadmap bonus, that is 53.03 per cent (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste). The bonus itself is quantified at 5 per cent (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste). These figures belong on the page because they answer a question that otherwise costs time in the first meeting: is a roadmap worthwhile before the first measure is commissioned? Naming them gives a frame of reference, not a forecast for the individual case.

That demand is not easing is shown by one more figure: in the first half of 2026, new commitments for the federal efficient buildings scheme including heating support stood at 6.5 billion euros (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste, reporting KfW figures), against 5.2 billion euros (Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste, reporting KfW figures) in the same period a year earlier. No advertising line follows from that, but a frame of reference for your own page does: the demand is there, and firms are told apart by their qualification and by how understandable their own statements are, not by volume.

Where a funding note tips over

As soon as a sentence describes the outcome of an application rather than the conditions of a programme, it stops being information. Three formulations tip over particularly fast: a percentage without its condition, a processing time without a source, and the claim that the consultation pays for itself with no calculation beside it. As a rule it is enough to close every funding paragraph with the same addition: the date, the source, and the note that the approving authority decides on the application.

Separating discipline, building type and trigger

In practice an energy consultancy covers things that have nothing to do with each other from the searcher's point of view: the energy performance certificate for a sale, the renovation roadmap for a family with an older detached house, technical planning and construction supervision for an owners' association, advice on a non-residential building with a ventilation system. Bundling all of that onto one page asks the reader to do the sorting the firm should have done. The thinking is the same as with one page per service — except that two further axes come into play here.

The first axis is the building type: a home with one or two dwellings, an apartment building, a non-residential building, a listed building. The second is the trigger: a purchase, a sale, an upcoming boiler replacement, a bill that has risen, a date from a contract. Only the third axis is what the firm actually does. A page that starts with building type and trigger and names the service afterwards gets read by exactly the people it means. Firms that also install will know this split from the article on EV charging and solar as separate entry points.

Building type first

Homes with up to two dwellings, apartment buildings, non-residential buildings, listed buildings: four entry points a reader tells apart at a glance. The listing in the expert register is tied to building types anyway.

Name the trigger

Purchase, sale, boiler replacement, a high bill, a date from a contract. The trigger decides how urgent a case is and which documents should be brought to the first appointment.

Show the discipline

Engineering, architecture, skilled trade, technician, chimney sweep: the discipline explains why a firm looks after certain buildings and systems and hands others on to colleagues.

Area as place names

The service area as a list of places rather than a radius in kilometres. Anyone offering an on-site survey also makes the travel calculable for both sides.

These axes do not produce four pages, but a manageable number of combinations that genuinely differ. A firm looking after homes with up to two dwellings and apartment buildings has two entry points and two to four triggers under each. That is a structure you set up once and then extend, rather than rebuilding it with every new funding announcement. The same split by trigger works in entirely different trades too, for instance with custom-made pieces and their enquiries.

A qualification you only learn about in conversation has already failed the shortlisting.

The enquiry form as a first survey

A contact form with the fields name, email and message almost inevitably produces a follow-up question for an energy consultancy.

Year of construction, floor area, heating system and trigger are missing, so the first call starts with four questions a form could have asked. Pulling those fields forward does not move work around, it saves a round trip. How a form is built in general so that it collects enquiries instead of deterring them applies here unchanged; only the fields and their order differ.

That order matters more than the number of fields. First comes what the enquirer knows without looking anything up: trigger, building type, place. Then what takes a moment of thought: year of construction, floor area, type and age of the heating system. The contact details come last. A form that opens with the year of construction loses people who do not have it to hand; one that does not ask for it moves the gap into the callback. A price estimator that qualifies enquiries uses the same logic — except that the end result is an appointment, not a price.

For enquiries from owners' associations and from property managers, a separate variant of the form is worth it: there the person writing is rarely the person signing, and the documents sit somewhere else. Which routes belong apart is described in more detail in the article on a property management website between owners and tenants. For existing clients needing a repeat service, a short service form without the full survey is enough — otherwise a two-line request turns into a case file.

Legal anchors you may cite

Two provisions give the credentials block its footing because they can be looked up publicly.

The first is section 88 of the German buildings modernisation act: it governs who may issue an energy performance certificate, and it is also the basis of the base qualification for the expert register. The register puts it this way: "Im Rahmen der Grundqualifikation müssen Energieeffizienz-Expertinnen und -Experten in der Regel zur Ausstellung von Energieausweisen gemäß §88 Gebäudeenergiegesetz (GEG) (vgl. Regelheft Seite 41) berechtigt sein." Anyone quoting that sentence does not have to interpret it — they only have to show which of the routes named in the statute their own entitlement runs through.

  • Entitlement under the building regulations of the federal states to sign structural thermal insulation certificates, within the scope of that entitlement
  • A professional degree in architecture, interior architecture, building construction, civil engineering, building services engineering, physics, building physics, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering
  • A degree in another technical or scientific discipline with a training focus in one of the fields named above
  • Meeting the requirements for entry in the craft register for a licensed building, finishing or building services trade or for the chimney sweep trade
  • A master craftsman title for an exempt trade in one of those areas
  • An entitlement acquired through training to practise a licensed trade in one of those areas independently without a master craftsman title
  • A state-recognised or state-certified technician whose training focus covers assessing the building envelope, heating, hot water or ventilation
  • Entitlement under the rules of the federal states to issue the declaration of compliance under section 92
  • By way of derogation, a successfully completed energy consulting qualification examination of the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control is sufficient

The second provision is section 80 of the same act. Its paragraph 4 ends with a sentence that a consultancy website can use directly: "Im Falle des Verkaufs eines Wohngebäudes mit nicht mehr als zwei Wohnungen hat der Käufer nach Übergabe des Energieausweises ein informatorisches Beratungsgespräch zum Energieausweis mit einer nach § 88 zur Ausstellung von Energieausweisen berechtigten Person zu führen, wenn ein solches Beratungsgespräch als einzelne Leistung unentgeltlich angeboten wird." In short: if the certificate is handed over on the sale of a home with no more than two dwellings and such a conversation is offered free of charge as a separate service, the buyer is to have it. Offering one gives you a trigger that needs no explanation — and a page naming that trigger gets found by buyers.

Two names for the same provision

Sections 80 and 88 still sit at the address of the buildings energy act but now carry the heading of the buildings modernisation act. The Energieeffizienz-Expertenliste cites the same provision as "§88 Gebäudeenergiegesetz (GEG)". On your own page that is unproblematic as long as the reference is linked: naming the section number and the link stays correct even when the short title of the act changes.
  1. The courses of the last three years with title, provider and year — as a list, without evaluation
  2. The building types the firm has actually worked on in the current year
  3. The programmes whose applications were supported technically, with the name of the approving authority
  4. The person who holds the listing, if several professionals work in the firm
  5. The date on which these details were last verified, visible at the end of the block
  6. A pointer to the search function of the register, so the check does not end at the firm itself

Those six points together are shorter than a paragraph of marketing copy, and they last longer. They also answer a question clients rarely voice: what actually happens if something is wrong? The register describes a graduated procedure for that — conditions such as additional training, full or partial removal from the register, and in the most severe case termination. A firm that mentions this does not look vulnerable; it shows that it works inside a reviewed system and does not shy away from the review.

  1. Week 1: gather the listing, discipline, building types and validity date from your own records and note the reference for each detail
  2. Week 2: write the credentials block and place it above the first heading — on the home page and on every page that mentions funding
  3. Week 3: revise the funding paragraphs, close each one with a date, a source and a caveat, and delete the wordings that describe an outcome
  4. Week 4: extend the enquiry form with the building data, add a second variant for property managers, and test both with two internal enquiries
  5. After that: set a fixed quarterly date for checking the validity date, the programmes and the courses — with the same eye you would give an invoice

Following that order leaves you after four weeks not with a new website, but with one that leaves one question fewer open. The effect shows on the phone first: calls no longer start with "do you even do that?" but with a year of construction. So that the page is also found, the same credentials block belongs in your local visibility; anyone naming a fee will find the rules for that in the article on showing prices on your website. How all of this comes together without hand-editing addresses and templates is shown by the features of XICflow.
